FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Distance Learning?
Distance Learning in general can be defined as the formal dissemination of instructive curricula which is not dependent upon time or place via the use of multiple delivery options such as audio, video, multimedia communications and computer technologies.

Distance Learning classes are equivalent to traditional classes in terms of objectives, content and transfer of credit.  Students must meet stated prerequisites where applicable, and adhere to assignment/project deadlines.

Is Distance Learning right for Me?
Take this short questionnaire to find out: http://www.distancelearn.org/readyDL.cfm

What are the benefits of Distance Learning?
•  Flexible Scheduling – students and working professionals are afforded opportunities to learn without time or place restrictions.
•  More course offerings -- Course options are not limited by a geographic location, so students are not limited to courses at one university.
•  Reduced Commuting – students save time and money by not having to commute as often to campus.
•  Technology – Distance Learning takes advantage of emerging technologies, and encourages students to be resourceful.

What are the disadvantages of Distance Learning?
•  Structure – Students must be motivated, disciplined and organized to succeed in a distance learning course.
•  Technology – Students may not have the necessary hardware or software required for a distance learning course;  unforeseen malfunction of computer equipment (computers, printers, etc.).
•  Communication – Face-to-Face contact with an instructor is virtually non-existent.  Communication is generally done via email, which may not trigger an immediate response.

How do I register for a Distance Learning class?
Students register for distance learning courses in the same way that they register for all credit courses: through the Registrar's Office (http://www.unf.edu/). Tuition is the same, but an additional technology fee is assessed to CCEC Distance Learning classes.

Why is there a fee for Distance Learning?
The Video Production Facility at UNF provides students with the highest quality ‘e-Learning’ experience possible.  These students have the benefit of flexible class scheduling, and may access video lectures whenever, and as often as they like.  Delivering this type of quality, on-demand technology is expensive.  Although an additional fee is applied to cover operational, consumable, and administrative costs, the fee is only a partial recovery of our total expenses.

Can I take this Distance Learning class at my own pace?
No. Each distance learning class is the equivalent of an on-campus section of the same course, in terms of objectives, content, rigor, and transfer of credit. It is the responsibility of the distance learning student to keep current with the lectures and submit all course assignments on time.

As a Distance Learning student, am I required to attend class?
Although distance learning students are not required to attend regular class lectures, there may be occasions when the instructor requires attendance for testing, presentation of a specific topic, or other reasonable situation, as determined by the instructor.

How are exams administered?
There are three methods:

  1. On campus with the in-class section, or proctored separately
  2. Off campus proctor (special conditions apply)
  3. Web-based course tool (BlackBoard)

The testing method will be determined by the instructor.

How do I interact with my instructor and classmates?
Due to the limited face-to-face interaction, most communication is facilitated via telephone, email, or discussion boards.  Refer to the course syllabus for your instructor’s contact information and office hours.

Who do I contact for help?
•  Course-specific questions such as those related to course content, assignments, required text, and prerequisites should be directed to the course instructor.
•  Technical questions regarding Blackboard, or issues with your UNF email should be directed to UNF Information Technology Services:
http://www.unf.edu/dept/its/index_students.html
•  Information regarding specific CCEC e-Learn policies and procedures should contact The CCEC Distance Learning Center at UNF.  We are here to provide support and a quality distance learning experience.
